It was at the Las Cruces International Mariachi Conference that Elisa met Alvaro Paulino Jr. from New York City. They were both attending the workshops and became friends.
In 2012 we received a call from Alvaro. He was very excited about establishing the first mariachi conference in New York. Alvaro mentioned that it would mean a lot to him if Elisa’s foundation could be a part of this conference. We are so grateful for this kind gesture, because it opened another avenue for people to learn about Elisa and the foundation.
In June of 2012 the first Elisa Gastellum Scholarship was awarded to a young student at the New York City Mariachi Conservatory in Brooklyn. The scholarship pays for one year’s tuition at the conservatory.
